Year 1 provides a foundation in business disciplines necessary to support the subjects studied in the second and final year. You will develop a wide range of business, personal and IT skills vital to any business and management career. It is also possible to study a language, including Japanese, French or Spanish.
Year 1 common modules include: • Accounting • Quantitative and Statistical Methods • Organisations, Markets and Economy • People Management
Year 2 sharpens your focus on business operations and functional areas. You will take modules relating to core areas of management and continue to enhance your personal and management skills as your programme of management development unfolds. You may also continue to study a language.
After year 2, you have the option to take a, paid, placement year, or study abroad on an Erasmus exchange.
In your final year, you may confirm your original choice of degree or change freely to any of the other degrees in the suite. You may wish to study a range of modules covering a number of major management functions, in which case you will be awarded the BSc (Hons) Business and Management Studies degree. Alternatively, you can specialise in a particular area of management and gain the corresponding Honours degree.
How will I learn? Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials using a wide range of learning activities. All students will experience small group tutorials, supporting your first and second year modular studies. These ensure that you are highly skilled in time for your placement or year abroad and final year studies. In the final year, you may choose to manage a virtual company in a small group, competing with others.
Can I get work experience? Before you decide on your final year specialist area, you can gain experience of a real business environment. In this case you may take advantage of our well-developed and successful placement scheme, often with very high profile organisations. Assistance in finding a placement is provided by our industrial placement tutor. Current and recent students have enjoyed placements with: NatWest, Barclays and Co-operative Banks; BP, Esso and Shell; IBM, Hewlett-Packard/ Compaq; Ford, Vauxhall, Jaguar and Nissan; Marks & Spencer, Selfridges and Sainsbury’s; and Eli Lilly, Glaxo and ICI. Other placements include the NHS, the education sector and environmental, arts and cultural organisations.
There is also the opportunity to study abroad for a year. Many of our partner institutions in Europe teach in English, allowing you to continue your studies while experiencing a new culture.
“You get the practical, hands-on experience. There is a strong academic background to it, but it’s actually real world situations and things you’ll be dealing with in terms of problems, trouble shooting – real management situations.”
Michael Business and Management Studies student
Where can I get a job?
Since the degree allows you to specialise in a range of areas following a general foundation, the careers chosen by graduates vary widely. Recent graduates have taken up employment with major companies such as BMW, Toyota, Nestle, McVitie, American Express, Citibank and PricewaterhouseCoopers, as well as many retailers, smaller organisations and public sector departments. Each year a number of students choose to enter postgraduate study, undertake a teaching qualification or start their own business.
