Media HND Media Production

What’s it about?

If you want to work in a technical or production role in radio or TV, as a researcher, director, editor or camera person, this programme is for you. It will provide you with the base of practical skills in TV and radio production that you will need. The experience you gain in making TV and radio productions is reinforced by theoretical and critical studies of the broadcast industries. The growth in local TV services such as MUTV, as well as facilities companies in the area has provided good employment opportunities for our technically trained graduates. You can also go on to take an Honours degree when you have successfully completed the programme.

What will I learn?

In year 1, you will look at the areas of camera, sound, editing and video and audio, as well as production techniques. You will learn about the UK broadcast industry and the bodies which work with it. You will make your own video projects offer, pitching your ideas to a team of professionals.

Year 2 core modules include a show-reel project where you will be part of a crew, and a module on industrial and professional practice. Optional modules give you the chance to specialise in two of the following areas: drama; documentary; experimental video; studio; radio; and website design/new media. You can choose six study modules from 17 options, ranging from practical workshops to analytical modules and academic modules. The pathways are: Production, Camera, Sound, Edit and Radio.

Areas of study include: • Industrial and Professional Practice • Video and Audio Development • Digital Multimedia • Production Management • Research and Produce • Radio Presentation • Audio Post Production • Imagineering

How will I learn? Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, tutorials and practical work. Workshop teaching in small groups is combined with your practical project work.

Students will be well placed to take advantage of the opportunities presented by MediaCityUK.

Can I get work experience? The University is one of ITV Granada’s selected media partners, so you can apply for a work experience placement or special internship at Granada’s Quay Street Studios in Manchester. We also have excellent contacts throughout the rest of the industry who are constantly in touch with opportunities for work placements. Plus, with the BBC’s move to Salford Quays, there will be plenty of opportunities for our media graduates.

Where can I get a job?

The programme has established an impressive reputation whereby employers request our students. Previous students have gone on to work in the broadcast industries as technicians, researchers and at trainee/assistant level. They have worked for independent production companies, BBC TV and Radio, MUTV, ITV and commercial film companies.
