Biology BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science
What’s it about?
Biomedical scientists work at the interface between biological and medical sciences. They are involved in issues surrounding human health and disease.
What will I learn?
This programme explains processes involved in health and disease. You will acquire a broad understanding of the normal functioning of the human body and then move into specialised medical and pathological aspects of diseases affecting people. By your final year, rapidly advancing subject areas are covered and you will carry out a project in a medically- relevant field of research in our Biomedical Research Laboratories. You will gain an understanding of the underlying mechanisms and causes, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. In year 3 you can choose to undertake a lab-based research project or an optional module.

How will I learn?
Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, practical classes, small group tutorials, research projects and guided reading.
Can I get work experience?
We encourage all of our students to take up an additional placement year between years 2 and 3. In many cases this can be a salaried position with a major company or financial support linked to a public health laboratory or hospital (such as Hope Hospital in Salford or the North Staffordshire Hospital). If taken, the placement contributes one third of the overall year 2 mark. You can also study overseas in France, Germany and Spain. All EU exchanges are supported by an Erasmus grant.
“Some of the best parts of this course are the practical lessons. I have really enjoyed working in the laboratories, and aspects of the practical assessments, such as having to decide on a clinical diagnosis for samples we were working with.
The course has opened a number of opportunities up for me. During the summer break I’ve applied to do research that will focus on fibroblasts, and the role of T-cells in either asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, based at Wythenshawe Hospital or the labs here at Salford. I’m also looking forward to my placement year at University Hospital Aintree where I will be involved in a research project concerning sleep disorders.”

Where can I get a job?
This degree is ideal for careers in biomedicine, pharmaceutical and food industries and forensic science, both in the UK and internationally.
Current employment prospects are very good with high demand for biomedical science graduates for varied positions in hospitals, NHS diagnostics laboratories; pathology, forensic or microbiology laboratories; government, private companies, university or charity-funded research laboratories; research and development; or sales and marketing for the health care industries.
You can also continue to postgraduate study on taught or research Masters’ programmes or PhDs, or go in to teaching.
