Biology BSc (Hons) Pharmaceutical Science
What’s it about?
This is a degree programme, positioned between chemistry and biology, which explains the biological mechanisms of disease and the actions of drugs.
Completion of the Human Genome Project means that it is now possible to identify the genes associated with many cancers and inherited disorders. This presents many challenges. At Salford we are training a new generation of pharmaceutical specialists to meet these new challenges and to apply scientific knowledge to design drugs to improve the quality of people’s lives.
What will I learn?
You will learn about the discovery of medicines for the 21st century and understand how biomolecules, which are involved in all cellular processes, contribute to the normal functioning of the human body.

How will I learn? Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, practical classes, tutorials, research projects and guided independent learning.
Can I get work experience?
We encourage all of our students to complete an additional placement year between years 2 and 3. In many cases this can be a salaried position with a major company or financial support linked to a public health laboratory or hospital (such as the Respiratory Physiology Unit at the Royal Aintree Hospital in Liverpool). In our experience, final degree results and employability are enhanced for students who undertake a placement year.
There are opportunities for spending a proportion of your second year in another European country. All EU exchanges are supported by an Erasmus grant.
Where can I get a job?
Although particularly relevant for careers in pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, this programme is also suitable if you want a career in research, teaching, animal health, food science, cosmetic science, medical laboratories, technical sales, patent law and scientific journalism. Biology and biochemistry are important parts of all these professions.
A large proportion of our graduates are employed in bioscience with companies such as AstraZeneca and the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research, or they carry on to further study.
Recent graduates from this programme went on to work for: Apollo Scientific, Leighton Hospital.
