What’s it about?
If you are seeking a high-level career in accountancy, finance, banking, insurance, the public sector, or general management, the BSc (Hons) Finance and Accounting will equip you with the skills you need.
The programme team has excellent relations with local employers and national accounting bodies which is reflected in their support of the programme through annual students prizes and guest presentations.
You will gain significant exemptions from the exams, including nine from the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), nine from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and four from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). The industrial placement year is recognised by CIMA and ACCA as one of the three years of postgraduate experience required for formal certification.
What will I learn?
In year 1 of the BSc (Hons) Finance and Accounting you will cover the foundations of accounting, economics, business law, people management and quantitative techniques. You will also expand your knowledge of how business works and gain vital interpersonal and communication skills. Year 2 builds on specialist knowledge related to financial and management accounting, statistical analysis and financial systems, as well as covering general themes such as company law, the economic environment and organisational behaviour.
Your final year covers advanced financial and management accounting and you will learn how to take financially based business decisions.
Modules include: • Principles of Accounting • Organisations, Markets and Economy • Company Law • Business Finance • Business Decision Making • Financial Accounting • Optional modules include: Business Taxation; International Finance; Financial Economics; and Audit Framework
How will I learn? Teaching is delivered through lectures, seminars, tutorials and practical workshops.
Can I get work experience? You will be offered the chance to secure an industrial placement after year 2. Previous students have secured placements with national employers such as Tenon, Network Rail, Siemens, Adidas, BUPA, British Gas and Lucas Industries, as well as local employers from the public sector or commercial and service organisations.
“I attended a number of open days when considering which university was best for me. I first considered Salford because it gave me maximum exemptions from the professional accountancy exams and it gave me the opportunity to undertake a placement.
Once I had started the course I found the lecturers, tutors and support staff very helpful and the placement I obtained at Central Manchester and Manchester Children’s University Hospitals NHS Trust provided me with valuable experience in both financial and management accounting.”
Stacey Morris BSc (Hons) Finance and Accounting
