Built Environment BSc (Hons) Building Surveying
What’s it about?
This programme will educate you to the highest industry standards set by The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), by developing your knowledge of economic, legal, technical, design and management subjects.
What will I learn?
You will develop the professional and technical skills specific to building surveying, as well as presentation, communication and collaboration skills vital in everyday business.
Modules include: • Economics and Management • Environmental Science and Services • Property Law and Landlord and Tenant Law
• Building Pathology • Design Studies
During year 1, you will study essential foundation subjects common to the other related programmes. Year 2 will introduce you to subjects specific to this degree, covering technical, legal, managerial and economic areas, and some subjects which are common to other programmes. In your final year you will complete a research dissertation, as well as attending taught modules.
How will I learn? This programme is taught through a combination of academic study and project work. You will work with other students from other related programmes, mirroring the multidisciplinary, team-based approach of the modern construction and property industry.
Can I get work experience?
Full-time students are given the option to take an industrial placement year. This takes place between years two and three and offers you the opportunity to apply your knowledge in the workplace and develop professional and technical skills.
Students are responsible for securing their own work placement. To help with this process we will support students to develop their employability skills.
Where can I get a job?
Building surveyors are in considerable demand nationally. As a graduate of this programme, you are likely to be employed by private practices, local and central government or client organisations. Some building surveyors become expert legal witnesses in legal disputes, due to their recognised expertise within certain areas.

Average teaching contact time: Contact hours are variable depending on the nature and type of module being delivered – can average between 12 and 15 hours per week
