BA (Hons) Arabic/English Translation and Interpreting
What’s it about?
While many people can communicate in more than one language, bilingualism is only the beginning of translation and interpreting. This unique programme, designed for students with a high-level of competence in Arabic and English, will teach you the skills essential to translating and interpreting material from Arabic to English and English to Arabic. This is a programme which will provide you with specialised skills with real-world value that could lead to a wide range of career opportunities.
What will I learn?
Throughout your degree studies, as well as learning a combination of specialist language skills, you will study general modules in Arabic and English language. In year 1 you will also be introduced to the basic concepts of linguistics and translation and interpreting. During year 2 you will start developing the essential skills for interpreting. You will develop a good memory for what is said and the ability to find means of expression in each language when there are no equivalent words. The final year focuses on more specialised translating and interpreting. You can also choose to complete a dissertation.
Modules include: • Arabic Language • English Language • Contemporary Europe • Introduction to Translation and Interpreting
• Linguistics for Translators and Interpreters • Theory of Translation and Interpreting • Liaison Interpreting • Advanced Translation • Simultaneous and Consecutive Interpreting
How will I learn?
Language modules are taught in seminar groups for oral, written language and translation, and larger traditional group lectures for content-based teaching such as history and contemporary society.
Other modules include whole cohort lectures and/or seminars. Translation and interpreting modules involve a variety of teaching and learning approaches, at times combining lectures with weekly seminar or workshops sessions (eg. for interpreting work).
Where can I get a job?
The practical nature of this programme will provide you with an excellent basis for entry to a wide range of careers which include professional language use. Examples are: in-house or freelance translation and interpreting, public relations and the media, international business, teaching, international diplomacy and government employment.
Graduates of this programme now work for major companies with interests in the Middle East, including Saudi Aramco and the BBC. Others work as freelance interpreters and translators in the public sector. Alternatively you may wish to use your qualification to undertake further study. Previous students have taken postgraduate programmes in translation and interpreting and carried out research in related areas. Personal tutors can offer advice, encouragement and references.
