What’s it about?
This programme has a national reputation for highly contemporary and innovative work.
There is a supportive student-centred framework, which is broad, challenging and rigorous. There’s a focus on experimentation, ideas, context, ethics and responsibility, while challenging and redefining conventions. You will explore and develop personal strategies and approaches within a broad range of social, cultural and environmental contexts, going beyond commercial constraints. The breadth and depth of the programme enables you to contextualise and develop a personal direction within three pathways – illustration; motion and interactivity (screen-based graphics such as television graphics, title sequences and web design); communication (graphic design, advertising and typography).
What will I learn?
Year 1 is tutor-led, broad and diagnostic. You will be introduced to graphic communication, fundamental intellectual and practical principles, and aspects of graphic communication. From a strong base in drawing, research, ideas, workshops and media skills, you will be able to explore a range of specialisms across graphic communication practice. You will then choose to follow one of these pathways, based on their strengths and interests.
Year 2 is semi-directed and dedicated to developing knowledge through practical projects and the development of personal practice within a specific pathway. The pathways emphasise professional issues and experimentation, allowing you to pursue an increasingly individual direction. Comparing common themes and differences between specialisms, you will be provided with the knowledge to exercise skills and develop sensibilities necessary to achieve your own pathway goal. You will enter national and international competitions, take part in exchanges and placements, and carry out live project briefs.
During year 3, modules are predominantly student-led, emphasising individual focus, ambition, application and consolidation. You will develop an independent programme of work, including live, contextual and self-generated projects or work for competitions. You may work individually or collaboratively.

How will I learn?
Teaching and learning activities include lectures, tutorials, seminars, self-directed study and practical workshops for skill development. Design projects provide the main method of learning and students receive regular feedback on their work through seminars and group tutorials. You will receive a personal tutorial at least once per semester.
Can I get work experience?
In years 2 and 3 you have the opportunity to work closely with industry, usually with one of our contacts. These include Love Creative, Code, Root Design, Spin, Bubble Media, GQ, Mainframe, Fudge and BBC21CC. Some graduates go on to find employment with these companies.
There is also the option to study overseas in Finland, France and Italy. Teaching is in English and all EU exchanges are supported by an Erasmus grant. There are also visits to other countries so you can study different cultural approaches to design – previous destinations have included Barcelona and New York.
Where can I get a job?
When you graduate you will be prepared for a range of careers in design and design-related professions and our students have gone on to work at Love Creative, Vault 49 New York, Typo com, Raw, Toy, Young, GQ, Harpers & Queen, Showstudio, Skaggs Advertising in New York and Sha-La-La workshop, Hong Kong. Many graduates also go on to study at postgraduate level.
