Social Work What’s it about?

This innovative programme offers you the opportunity to qualify both as a registered nurse working with people with a learning disability and as a registered social worker. It is the first programme of its kind to be offered in the UK north of London and is validated by the General Social Care Council (GSCC) and the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

The programme acknowledges that the rights and needs of people with a learning disability are not clearly divisible into health or social care services. While recognising that some distinct teaching of nursing and social work is necessary, the programme adopts a holistic approach and emphasises the need for training programmes to develop transferable skills and strategies for caring.

What will I learn?

Your time will be split equally between theory and practice. You will study a number of topics including sociology, psychology, social policy, law and ethics, risk and abuse, health promotion and human growth and development.

Modules include: • Introduction to Nursing and Social Work Practice

• Introduction to Law and Social Policy • Health and Welfare. • Professional Practice • Comparative Studies of Health and Welfare

How will I learn?

A variety of teaching and learning methods are used. Lectures, seminars, directed study, problem-based learning and individual tutorials are a few examples.

Can I get work experience?

You will undertake a number of practice placements in a variety of social work and nursing environments, some specific to learning disability services.

What about funding?

Your fees will be paid by the Strategic Health Authority. Means-tested bursaries may be available, depending on your individual circumstances.

Where can I get a job?

As a practitioner who recognises the importance of collaboration across the social and health care divide, you will be extremely valuable to employers. You will be well equipped to take up a range of posts, many within statutory services, for example in day, field or residential services. You may also go on to be a staff nurse, community nurse, social worker or care manager and decide to work with offenders or children with challenging behaviour. Your career prospects will be varied.

Social work is a regulated profession. As a social work student you will be expected to register with the General Social Care Council (GSCC), the social work profession’s regulator, and adhere to the standards set out in the Code of Practice for Social Workers.

As well as regulating individual social workers and students, we also regulate the performance of social work courses, the reports of which are published on our website, so you can check to see how each university is performing.
