developing the rapport necessary for a good interview. A friendly handshake, a hospitable greeting, and perhaps a cup of coffee are always good ways to start.
Once the interview begins: • Ask simple questions first. • Be aware of the time and don’t feel rushed. • Listen to what is being said.
• Concentrate rather than thinking ahead when the interviewee is speaking.
• Strive to maintain excellent eye contact and observe the candidate’s nonverbal behavior.
• Listen open-mindedly.
Recognize that the candidate is probably very eager to learn about the position and the facility. A rule of thumb is to listen for about 75 percent of the interview and talk for about 25 percent. Follow-up after the interview is necessary. If there is no human resources staff assisting, it is a considerate gesture to notify the applicant that they are not being considered for the position. There may be another vacant position for which the interviewee will be eligible. If the applicant is qualified, it is fair to inform the interviewee. Name a time by when the selection will be decided. Adhere to the schedule or apprise the interviewee of any changes in the timetable. If the interviewee is qualified and there are no other applicants to consider, inform the interviewee that a job offer will be extended.
If working with a human resources department, each interview team member may be asked to rank the candidates based on the selection criteria. The human resources department will follow up with the candidate after the interview.
