SKIN MICROBIOME
C. granulosum, M. luteus, S. caprae and S. hominis are now part of the communication network.
The majority is not collaborating. Still, there
is no network. All collaborations happen in small islands between non-skin microbiota members. The skin microbiome is still not recovered. The amount of communication lines is 4000 (Figure 3). After the treatment with the test product
(containing 2% salicylic acid and 2% EPI) a complete recovery of collaboration and communication is observed (Figure 2C). All the important protective members are again working together. Even the rebellious C. acnes and
S. epidermidis are again part of the communication network. Again, they work together with Corynebacteria, other Cutibacteria, and with protective fungi such as Malassezia. The skin microbiome is back in balance as the complete network of 14,000 communication lines (Figure 3) is active again.
Result 2: Microbial population evolution Besides studying the collaboration between the micro-organisms, the abundance of each micro-organism has been monitored. The acne- prone skin has a high abundance of C. acnes. An average of 79% was determined. When the skin was treated for 28 days with the placebo (containing 2% salicylic acid) the average became 82%.

Figure 8: Microbiome composition changes after four hours, compared to initial situation With salicylic acid alone the dominancy of
C. acnes did not significantly decline. However, when the salicylic acid was combined with 2% EPI, C. acnes is reduced back to a healthy abundance of 57% (Figure 4). Not only is the C. acnes is normalized, but also the microbial diversity is completely restored with the prebiotic. The diversity increased from 250 species to a healthy level of 430 species (Figure 5). The diversity increased by 72%.
Result 3: Gene expressions With metagenomics, gen expressions can also be determined. When the acne-prone skin is only treated with salicylic acid (placebo), possible pathogenic gene expressions in C. acnes are still detected (Figure 6). However, when salicylic acid is combined
with the prebiotic EPI, only possible protective gene expressions are detected. Examples of some pathogenic behaviour and protective
