BASF takes wraps off clean-beauty retinol grade
BASF has taken the wraps off Retinol 50, a grade delivering stability performance without the addition of BHA (beta hydroxy acid) and BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene). The German chemicals giant
says Retinol 50 allows brands to comply with many industry clean lists more easily due to the removal of ingredients of concern. BHA and BHT have been included on many clean beauty lists in the personal care industry such
as Clean at Sephora and Conscious Beauty at Ulta Beauty.
“With the addition
of Retinol 50 to our portfolio, BASF continues to meet consumer and industry requirements for clean- conscious beauty products,” said Nader Mahmoud, Vice President Business Management for Personal Care North America. “As a key supplier of retinol
Solvay unleashes Naternal bio-based polymers brand
Solvay has launched Naternal, its new brand of bio-based biodegradable polymers for hair and skin care. The company says the brand embodies
regenerative beauty “that cares for every stakeholder, from the planet to farming communities on the ground, brands and consumers”. By leveraging the power of nature and
science, Solvay says Naternal brings together biodegradable beauty care polymers, from guar and other natural feedstocks, to pave the way for future innovations that address consumer expectations and upcoming regulations. “Naternal represents a new era where
beauty, the planet and fair treatment of farming communities can all be balanced,” said home & personal care vice-president Jean-Guy Le-Helloco. The array of ingredients offered by Naternal, it adds, aligns with the biodegradable by-design approach, which aims at integrating end-of-life management at the early stages of research and ensuring that product development is driven by both application and end-of-life performances. “The beauty industry is at the beginning
of a green chemistry transformation with biodegradability standing as one of the most pressing challenges to tackle,” stated Galder Cristobal, Research & Innovation Director, Home & Personal Care at Solvay.
to the market, BASF Care Chemicals must continue to optimize our portfolio and innovate for the market demands of today and the future,” he added. Retinol 50 has similar
stability to BASF’s Retinol 50C and contains high active
loads of ~50% retinol. BASF says Retinol 50 offers
flexibility for product developers to further stabilize final formulations. In a related development, BASF
has released an upgraded version of its pore-tightening cosmetic active ingredient Laricyl, which is now derived from solid-state fermentation. For 20 years, Laricyl, an
extract from the Fomes officinalis mushroom, has been a tried- and-tested component of BASF’s portfolio of ingredients for pore refinement. The new version of Laricyl is
99.7% from natural origin according to ISO 16128.
