Evonik snaps up Argentina actives maker Novachem


Evonik has acquired Novachem, an Argentinian developer of cosmetic active ingredients based in Buenos Aires. Novachem, established in 2007


and employer of 20, develops biotechnological, natural, and sustainable active ingredients for skin and hair care applications. The German chemicals giant


said by leveraging Novachem’s innovation strategy, accessibility to biodiversity and strong skin and hair care portfolio, Evonik will boost its Systems Solutions portfolio in the Americas. “Latin America is one of the


most biodiverse regions in the world. The acquisition of Novachem will enable us to bring even more innovative and sustainable


solutions to our customers in the personal care market,” said Hendrik Schönfelder, regional president Central & South America Region at Evonik. By leveraging our


complementary knowhow and access to markets in the Americas and worldwide, we will be a step closer to achieving our goal of becoming the preferred sustainable specialties partner,” said Yann d’Hervé, head of Evonik’s Care Solutions business line. In a related development,


Evonik and Guangdong Marubi Biotechnology Co., Ltd. (Marubi) of China have entered into a cooperation agreement to support the development of the Chinese cosmetics industry.


The duo said local cosmetic


consumers will benefit from both companies’ complementary capabilities in raw materials, research, development and production. In addition, the two organizations


will exchange information on diverse topics including ingredient application and development, formulation, and studies on cosmetic market trends.


Croda concludes Solus Biotech purchase


Croda International has completed the acquisition of cosmetic actives producer Solus Biotech following unconditional approval from South Korean regulatory authorities. This follows the


announcement on 6 February that Croda had reached an agreement to acquire the Korean firm from Solus Advanced Materials for 350 billion Korean won ($263m). Solus, which employs 95


people at its R&D centre in Bundang near Seoul and its production centre in Iksan, is


a leading supplier of naturally derived powder ceramides. Solus will now expand Croda’s


Asian manufacturing capability and create a new biotechnology R&D hub in the region, working in synergy with Sederma’s R&D centre in Le Perray, France. The acquisition will also boost


Croda’s total offering across its personal care portfolio, with Solus’ phospholipids to be incorporated into Croda’s skin care and hair care franchises, sitting together across other leading formulation and product platforms. Our existing ceramides,


currently from Sederma, will be complemented by these natural fermentation-derived ceramides, furthering our portfolio of high efficacy science-based ingredients,” said Sederma global business director Luc Emprin. “We are pleased to add


Solus’ manufacturing site in South Korea to our operations, furthering our growth strategy for this key region. Innovation synergies between our different R&D labs will bring additional technical value and business opportunities for our customers all over the world,” he added.

German personal care ingredient distributor Brenntag has acquired Shanghai Saifu Chemical Development Company (Saifu) for an undisclosed sum. Founded in 2005, Saifu


distributes personal care ingredients, coatings, emulsion polymerization, and cleaning chemicals and provides related solution services.


Saifu had an annual revenue of €71m ($78m) in 2022. The

company currently has over 100 employees and serves more than 1,000 customers in the Greater China region, and has a dedicated


technology application centre with two laboratories. Brenntag Specialties chief


operating officer Michael Friede said: “Joining forces with Saifu in China is a significant step, expanding our global specialities footprint in the region and in the Asian personal care market, and strengthening our value-added services offering and innovation capabilities.”
