BASF partners with RiKarbon on bio-waste derived emollients

BASF and RiKarbon, a US-based technology start-up, have signed a partnership contract to exclusively license and commercialise the latter’s bio-waste technology for personal care ingredients. RiKarbon’s patented technology

allows the upcycling of bio-waste into bio-based, biodegradable emollients. The successful R&D work

at RiKarbon has demonstrated the conversion of bio-waste to new unique emollient chemical structures, while quickly elevating the technology from the laboratory-scale to the pilot stage. BASF says this innovative

technology manufactures a clear and odourless emollient imparting excellent soft and silky sensory properties to personal care

renewable plastics, healthcare, and specialty applications. These base oils and emollients

contain up to 100% bio-based, sustainable carbon. They can be used to make cosmetics that meet growing market demand and support manufacturers in meeting regulatory requirements. “With this partnership, BASF

formulations. The German giant intends to

bring the RiKarbon technology inhouse and is planning a market launch of the initial solutions in 2024.

Founded in 2018, RiKarbon’s

innovative technologies facilitate commercial production of renewable chemicals and high- performing ingredients, for example base oils and emollients for

continues to demonstrate our investment in open innovation and expand our innovative offerings to our customers,” said Dr Robert Parker, Director of New Business Development & Digital Officer, Care Chemicals at BASF. “RiKarbon’s results from

Marinova to triple Aussie manufacturing capacity

Australian fucoidan maker Marinova has kicked off a A$5m ($US3.33m) expansion of its manufacturing facility in Tasmania. Fucoidan is a bioactive

compound found naturally in brown seaweeds and highly prized for its range of beneficial health properties, particularly in the areas of immune support, gut and digestive health, and healthy ageing. This expansion will allow

Marinova to triple its fucoidan production capacity and involve

significant investment in advanced manufacturing technologies, as well as create highly skilled new jobs. “This extensive capital

investment will enable Marinova to readily meet the rising demand for its high purity extracts, particularly from the global medical and consumer healthcare sectors,” said chief executive Paul Garrott. The expansion of Marinova’s

fucoidan extraction facility is being supported by the Australian Government’s Modern

Manufacturing Initiative. The initiative provides

businesses with funding to support projects that translate high quality research into commercial outcomes and supports businesses to adopt new technologies and improve their manufacturing processes. The project also received support through the Tasmanian Government’s Building Projects Support Program and Advanced Manufacturing Accelerating Growth Program.
