Efficacy for scalp care
Consumers around the world are looking for products that will help protect their scalp against dehydration, while improving hair structure and shine. In response, BASF has reassessed its highly effective hydra-protect technology for skin
moisturisation, PatcH2O, and found it to be suitable for hair care applications such as anti- ageing scalp care.
A double-blind placebo-
controlled clinical study showed a significant, immediate and sustained improvement in scalp moisturisation. The study was performed on female volunteers with different skin and hair types: Caucasian, African, Hispanic and Asian. They tested a 2 per cent PatcH2O-containing leave-on hair serum against placebo in two groups. Scalp hydration was evaluated by dielectric conductivity at baseline, four hours, 21 days, and three days post treatment. Increased scalp
hydration up to 52 per cent against baseline could be demonstrated. Volunteers indicated that their scalp felt more comfortable and that PatcH2O led to a noticeable improvement in hair quality and shine. The patch technology is a
result of BASF’s dual expertise in natural macromolecules and the controlled release of active ingredients. Acting on two levels, PatcH2O offers optimum hydration: on the scalp’s surface, the unique combination of natural biopolymers, hyaluronic acid, alginate, and a natural glucan known as pullulan forms a 3D molecular mesh that reduces water evaporation like a protective film. This micro- network is loaded with a moisturising complex containing glycerin, L-serine, trehalose and urea, which is gradually released into the heart of the stratum corneum to rebalance the skin’s moisture level.
New jojoba process facility
Vantage has opened a new jojoba seed crushing facility located near its jojoba farm in Argentina. It allows Vantage to continue meeting the fast- growing, worldwide customer demand for jojoba-based sustainable beauty ingredients. Vantage became a majority owner of the Argentina jojoba farm, one of the world’s largest, in 2015. The company also owns two other large jojoba farms, and a nearby seed crushing facility, in the US (Arizona) that were acquired in 2012 and 2016. “At Vantage, we are
proud to expand our capabilities in Argentina. Our continued investments

around jojoba demonstrate that we are committed to providing long-term support for our customers and the beauty market. We are well- positioned to meet the growing global demand for jojoba-based ingredients as customers continue turning to these powerhouse materials in developing their innovative beauty products,” said Pat Brueggman, senior vice president & general manager at Vantage.
Alternative preservation without odour
Inolex continues to expand its alternative preservation portfolio with the addition of Lexgard O- LO to its Lexgard Series. Lexgard-LO is a low odour
alternative to caprylyl glycol and is ideal for beauty brands interested in alternative preservation targeting a consumer segment with odour-sensitivity. A
multifunctional bacteriostatic agent, Lexgard O-LO can be used as an alternative to traditional preservatives such as parabens and is ideal for fragrance free formulations. The product is manufactured using a unique, highly effective process that yields an ultra-low odour, an option increasingly favoured by cosmetic companies seeking alternatives to traditional
preservative systems. Lexgard O-LO has a broad pH range and is efficacious in both emulsion and surfactant based systems. “We continue to
recognise the needs of the beauty care industry by listening to the distinct challenges of our clients. As traditional preservatives become increasingly unfavoured, we are able to provide viable solutions that work,” said David Plimpton, CEO of Inolex. “With the recent establishment of a full-scale microbiology laboratory in Guangzhou, China, Inolex is committed to becoming the leading destination for all alternative preservation ingredients for beauty care.“
Natural extract enhances the skin’s clock genes
The biological clock is a new target of skin care. Ichimaru Pharcos (Stand Q70 at in- cosmetics Asia) has developed a new natural plant extract called Chrono Chardy, which is made from chardonnay grapes, to maintain the biological clock in skin cells. Chrono Chardy has 100% guaranteed traceability, sourced from one of the best grape-growing areas in Nagano, Japan.
Our body has a 24 hour
rhythm, from morning to evening, including the sleep cycle. In terms of beauty, a well-adjusted rhythm leads to better skin condition. However, busy lifestyles, psychological stress, UV stress and ageing can lead to disruptions of our biological clock.
It is reported that clock genes, Period and BMAL1, maintain skin moisturising and brightness in the daytime, and skin barrier function at night. One of Ichimaru Pharcos’s
findings is that the disordered biological clock causes an interruption of nocturnal ceramide transportation. Chrono Chardy enhances the action of the clock genes, promoting moisturised and brightened skin during the day. By increasing ceramide transportation, it also improves skin barrier function at night.
