According to Euromonitor International, the Asia Pacific (APAC) beauty and personal care market is set to grow by more than 30% over the next four years, reaching US$192 bn by 2021(Euromonitor data). This represents faster growth than the rest of the world, which is predicted to expand by almost 24% in the period. Within the APAC region, the countries expected to experience the most growth are Indonesia at 50% and China at 46%, followed by Malaysia and Vietnam which are forecast to grow by 41% and 39% respectively (Euromonitor data). The growth of the cosmetics and personal care markets in Asia is driven by skin care, sun care, hair care and colour cosmetics (Allied Market Research) - the most popular product types used in the
PERSONAL CARE ASIA PACIFIC
region. According to Allied Market Research, greater attention to appearance, as well as a growing male interest in cosmetics and personal care items, is helping drive sales across the region, while rising disposable income and the use of smartphones for purchase are also key factors. More specifically, the hair care sector is
taking off in the region as consumers turn to colouring and perming. As a result, instances of hair damage are on the rise as Asian hair becomes subject to products that historically have never been used before. Hair repair treatments are beginning to flood onto the market in this region – already a major hair care category in Caucasian countries where there has been greater awareness of the damage caused to hair through styling for years.
Three topical focuses This year’s in-cosmetics Asia, held in Bangkok from 31 October to 2 November, will provide APAC’s cosmetic manufacturers with an in-depth look at the driving forces behind the region’s cosmetics and personal care markets. With three brand new topical Spotlight On areas, dedicated to three of the hottest trends in Asia – facial masks, natural extracts and colour cosmetics – cosmetic chemists, marketers and R&D professionals will be able to source revolutionary new ingredients while furthering their regulatory and technical knowledge regarding these important product areas.
