follicles, they coordinate the actions of papilla fibroblasts and matrix keratinocytes in order to ensure hair growth.

l Epigenetics A revolutionary mechanism that explains how the environment can determine the activity of genes. A number of components are involved, including miRNAs, recently linked to the hair cycle.

At the level of the individuals, it leads to considerable hair benefits, which have been confirmed by volunteers themselves. The tests were conducted on a panel of 22 male volunteers between 31 and 55 years of age (mean age 43 ± 8), with slight to moderate alopecia (stages 2 to 5 according to the Hamilton-Norwood classification) and with

a minimum of 20% of hairs in telogen phase (latency). They applied 1 mL of the lotion containing 0.3% of the product in the mornings and evenings for 8 months. All measurements were made before the treatment and after 3, 6 and 8 months of application. The objective of the efficacy studies

in vivo was to (1) determine the hair growth effect, (2) determine its capacity to reduce hair loss and (3) quantify sensations felt by volunteers when using the product.

Results Hair growth effect The hair growth effect was studied with the phototrichogram method (a standardised macrophotographic study method), including

a TrichoScan (Tricholog GmbH) combining epiluminescence microscopy with automatic image analysis to measure hair growth. The following parameters were analysed: l Hair density. It is expected to be about 200 to 400 hairs per cm2

in a subject

without alopecia. In subjects suffering from baldness, this density decreases substantially, especially in the vertex, and can descend to 80 hairs per cm2 even less in zones with hair;

,

l Number of hairs in anagen phase: indicator of hair growth;

l Anagen/telogen ratio (using the number of hairs in anagen and telogen phases). This ratio is normally about 4 to 5. When less than 4, the scalp is alopecic;
