MUSIC LUKE CONCANNON VISIT
Matravers School were delighted to welcome international singer/songwriter Luke Concannon on Friday 15th June.
Luke performed a wonderful set of songs at a packed lunchtime Live Lounge that was inspiring. Luke went on to perform in the evening at the Laverton.
After his performance Luke worked with a group of Year 9 students exploring how to write their own songs. During the workshop Luke focused on the starting point of song writing and encouraged students to explore their voices and instruments experimentally, without prompts or restrictions. Students found this challenging yet liberating and all created a short idea perfect for future development.
We are extremely grateful to Westbury Festival and their sponsorship partners Sovereign Housing for facilitating Luke’s visit especially as Luke currently has such an intensive touring schedule. We look forward to working alongside both organisations in the future to inspire the young people of Westbury.
We wish Luke all of the best with the rest of his tour and would welcome him back in the future!
MODULO ORCHESTRA PERFORMANCE
The Matravers orchestra recently joined the Modulo programme which culminates in a performance in London at Cecil Sharp House. The programme features schools from across the country who learn the same pieces of music over the course of a few terms and then come together to perform.
The opportunity is amazing because not only do students experience performing in a large ensemble, they also meet like-minded students from elsewhere in the UK. The Matravers students were brilliant on the day and worked incredibly hard despite the heat! One of our students introduced the performance and was also interviewed for London Live! Over the course of the day students performed ‘Mambo’ from West Side Story, ‘Korobeiniki’ (Tetris theme), ‘La Rotta’ (Medieval Dance Music from Italy c. 1375-1400), ‘Minuet’ from Symphony No. 104 by Josef Hayden and ‘Waltz No.2’ from Suite for Variety Orchestra by Dimitri Shostakovich.
