YEAR 8

As we move into the end of Year 8 there has been much to note throughout the year ranging from the Beauty and the Beast and University trips to sporting accomplishments and individual’s successes throughout the curriculum. I have been privileged to lead the fantastic year group through another tremendous year at Matravers School.

The weekly competition has continued through the year which is based around attendance, behaviour and reward points. Winners have ranged over the different tutor groups with 8.1 and 8.2 with the final term yet to be decided. Well done on the continued attitude towards attendance and positivity in reward points.

We have had various visitors throughout the year and one such visitor, or should I say visitors, were a group of birds and in particular birds of prey. These stunning animals were on display for our year group to ask questions about and have fun finding out about their habits and feeding patterns to name a few key aspects. Some lucky individuals even got to hold the various types of birds which ranged from Buzzards, Falcons, Eagles and Owls.

Various trips have been organised and contacts developed throughout the year for a variety of reasons. Several trips have been to a local business including Audience Systems situated in Westbury, which is a local business that has worldwide connections in their field of expertise. The reasons were to highlight various careers and pathways available and to speak to individuals with expertise and experience within such fields. The departments that we looked at specifically included HR, Sales, Warehouse, Production, Engineering and Project Management. The pupils were fantastically well behaved and engaged with questioning and interacting with the speakers and members of the staff at the business. Many thanks go to their workforce that allowed the trips to go ahead.

Another trip was organised for the pupils in order to raise the understanding of University, including the courses that can be undertaken, the ups and down of student life, the technology, and the access to facilities that University life can bring. The University of Bath Spa provided a superb day looking at various aspects and sessions run by their members of staff and enthusiastic ambassadors. Members of the year group took a tour around the campus looking at facilities as well as taking part in various educational sessions and had a great opportunity to look at using “Green Screens” and cameras in one of the studios used to create films and music videos. It was a brilliant day and the feedback has been great from both the university and pupils alike.
