A-LEVEL ENGLISH LANGUAGE VISIT TO BITHAM BROOK

On Friday 16th March, the Year 13 A-level English Language students visited Bitham Brook Primary School. This was as part of the Child Language Acquisition component of their A-level. We were very grateful to Bitham Brook for allowing us the opportunity to spend some time visiting both Year 2 and Year 5 classes and this enabled our sixth formers to get involved in their lessons and to identify and experience first-hand the learning processes that take place. This provided them with an invaluable insight into child development in action.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS On 9 May 2018 The English Department ran a trip

to see a stage adaptation of Dickens’ novel ‘Great Expectations’ at the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham. This was a set text for some sets in both Year 11 and 10 and the trip was fully booked and well attended particularly because there was a trip to Pizza Express involved!

Adapting such a long novel for the stage was always going to be challenging however this version was both faithful to the text and it captured the principal relationships cleverly and artfully. Nicola McAuliffe was captivating as the jilted bride Miss Havisham and Sean Aydon played the young and older Pip with skill and sensitivity. As always, the students who attended were a real credit to Matravers and hopefully the experience will also be reflected in some pleasing Literature exam results come the summer.

FALCONRY VISIT

Year 8 studied a range of poetry last term based on animals as part of their Poetry Unit including Tennyson’s ‘The Eagle’ and Hughes’ ‘Hawk Roosting.’ To give these students a better understanding of these magnificent birds we invited ‘Wings and Talons’ falconer Rob Evans into school to give students a talk on birds of prey and to let some students hold the birds. Rob brought in a range of birds including a Kestrel, a Little Owl. A European Eagle Owl and a Steppes Eagle. Needless to say the students were fascinated and entertained by the presentation and delighted to see or hold these beautiful but intimidating predators.
