THE YEAR 12 TRIP TO DARTMOOR – APRIL 17TH -20TH 2018.

It was April 2018 which meant it was time for the annual A Level Geography trip to Dartmoor, a land of fields, ponies and very very large rocks!

The trip led by Mr Taylor, Miss Barron and Mr Cooper began on Tuesday 17th, we heaved all our luggage onto the mini buses, I had packed a rather well organised suitcase for the 4 day trip, others had somehow managed to apparently put everything they needed into one average sized backpack, how they did this we’ll never know. After a quick pit stop at Greggs we made it to Dartmoor. Unfortunately, when we arrived it was incredibly misty and pouring down with rain, as you’d expect for a typical British Spring time. This did not stop us Geographers however and we all scrambled off the bus for our first stop, a famous Dartmoor rock tour! It was more exciting then it sounds I promise. However we couldn’t stand the rain for long and so we journeyed on to our accommodation and carried our suitcases to our rooms. We had planned on going out on an outdoor hike of sorts but due to the bad weather we decided to change our plans and instead we went to two museums, the first was a nice small history of Dartmoor museum and the second was the infamous Dartmoor Prison Museum, very spooky but of course incredibly fascinating. We then made our way back, had a lovely dinner and got ready for the next day with a good night’s sleep.

Day two and the weather had seemed to decide to agree with us with a miniature heatwave, how kind of it! To kick off our first full day we travelled down to a nearby pebble beach in a local town and carried out a very fancy geographical investigation where we measured if rocks got smaller closer to the sea, just as exciting as it sounds but again very interesting and useful for our future independent projects in Year 13. We then, to the delight of us all who were melting in the heat, found an ice cream hut and we sat by the sea. We didn’t rest long though before heading onto Totness another nearby town to carry out a survey investigation and gain knowledge from the local

people, we learnt a lot about the area and found out quite a few interesting tales. We then returned to our accommodation but the day was not yet over for now it was time for…ARCHERY. I thought I was a pretty good shot although I think most of my team would have been inclined to disagree. We had a final last man standing competition and it turned out the best archer in the class was Gregor, congratulations! We finished off the day by having another fabulous dinner before heading off to another rock tour and watching the magnificent sunset, a sight I’m sure most of us won’t forget any time soon and then a quick walk back through a herd of ponies and their adorable foals and then to bed.

Thursday the 18th and was time for our forest investigation. The sun was once again smiling intensely down on us which made the 15 minute walk up to our spot all the more pleasant. We did though eventually reach our destination and we calculated tree ages based on their height and circumference of their trunk. After we finished and some other members of our group returned from exploring another rock tour we headed back to the buses and went along to a small village nearby where they served home made cream tea and more ice cream, two scoops each of course, and we had our lunch by a little river which we all out of shear heat intolerance dipped our feet into. After this we went to see a nearby dam, the amount of water there was just incredible and we knew this by how excited Mr Taylor was about it.

When we returned to our base we decided it was a good time to do what we hadn’t managed to do when
