‘Amazon purchases MGM’ was a bit of a misleading headline from my BBC News App. Having just completed the final features, interviews and articles for the Summer of Sport special that starts on Page 88, the acquisition of MGM would have needed more than a slight mention in our round-up of the major topics discussed in the 60+ page exhaustive commentary. The fact that the MGM in question was the Studios business made life a lot easier, but that fact that such massive deals are currently commonplace is changing the gaming landscape almost as much as enabling legislation is piling in the foundations.


In this issue we consider the legislative hurdles that have faced the introduction of sports betting in Brazil and the minefield that also includes Germany’s attempts to legislate for online gaming. It’s impossible to pull apart the threads of politics and gambling legislation as the stories play out like a Machiavellian drama filled with personalities and personal agendas. Draft Kings went public last year in a reverse merge, FanDuel was acquired by Flutter and sports leagues are accepting direct investment capital as investors seek out lucrative media rights. Just some of the giant deals playing out in a space that has as much drama off the pitch as on it. Delving into this, we explore the human side of the William Hill acquisition by Caesars in our interview with William Hill US former CEO, Joe Asher.
