explore licensing opportunities for the iconic bear and his friends Sweep and Soo. Richard Cadell, owner and presenter of

The Sooty Show, said: “It’s exciting times for Sooty, with a new series of the current show in development for CITV, Sooty, Sweep and Soo look set to benefit hugely from their exposure on TV and in Redan’s award-winning Fun To Learn magazines. Redan Publishing specialises in identifying the strongest pre-school characters around and it’s fantastic that they have seen the potential in Sooty. I’m really looking forward to developing the licensing side of the brand with the Redan team in 2013.” The Sooty Show has been running on

weekdays on CITV and is scheduled to do so

throughout 2013. The Sooty Paint colouring App made the Guardian’s top 30 best apps, and Steiff’s collectable Sooty, Sweep and Soo bears sold out in 2012. Sooty has also confirmed residencies at Butlins,

Pontins, and Cadbury World in 2013, and the 2012 annual Sooty Christmas Show at the Duchess Theatre in London was set to reach a

record audience of over 8,000 individuals. Michael Gottlieb, CEO of Redan Alchemy, said: “We are so excited to be working with an iconic, evergreen brand like Sooty. Not only do the characters fit perfectly into Redan’s much-loved children’s magazines, the opportunities for licensing across all categories, not only as a pre- school brand, but also as a heritage line for adults and children alike are enormous. We can’t wait to get started.”

The Beano’s 75th anniversary will be celebrated in 2013. The year will see a new series of

the CBBC show Dennis and Gnasher, renewed marketing investment in The Beano brand, and plans developing on licensing and further new products. GB Toys was announced as the new master toy licensee for the iconic DC Thomson-owned property, Dennis the Menace. The deal, brokered by DC Thomson’s agent, Start Licensing, will see Golden Bear’s GB Toys Division launching a complete range of older boy’s toys for Autumn/ Winter 2013. Under the three year agreement, GB Toys will be responsible for the development and supply of a comprehensive toy collection that will appeal primarily to boys with a secondary audience of classic fans. Included in the collection will be jokes and pranks, together with plush and plastic toys and accessories. Dennis the Menace has cross-generational appeal, as befits a legacy of being Britain’s quintessential mischievous comic character since 1951. Thanks to the continuing exposure in The Beano, as well as the Dennis and Gnasher animated series on CBBC, Dennis appeals to millions of children every week.

Other classic properties.....The sad passing of Gerry Anderson just after Christmas may well result in renewed interest in his classic stable of properties, especially Thunderbirds. Nickelodeon’s Spongebob Squarepants and Aaardman’s Wallace and Gromit have both attained ‘modern classic’ status, whilst Bulldog Licensing has a number of interesting classic brands in its portfolio that could potentially appeal to the children’s market, including Garfi eld and Shoot magazine.
