MarketingWorld Waterstones recreates Middle-Earth

Waterstones is to recreate Middle-Earth for its retail partnership with Warner Bros Consumer Products UK on The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The promotional event kicked off ahead of the London premiere of Academy Award-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson’s highly anticipated motion picture The Hobbit on 13 December 2012. The children’s reading

area in its flagship London store in Piccadilly has been transformed into Bag End, Hobbit Bilbo Baggins’ home in the Shire. Hobbit-footprints and bespoke signage will lead families through a circular archway into a The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey-inspired reading area. WBCP UK’s retail partnership with Waterstones acted as a showcase for a wide range of licensed

merchandise, which will be stocked across its UK stores. In addition to the original books by JRR Tolkien and publishing tie-ins such as The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’s Official Movie Guide, products on display will also include toys, games and collectables from licensees such as Lego, Vivid, Ravensburger, Winning Moves and Noble Collection. To drive consumer awareness, Waterstones is supported the activity with themed displays in 220

branches, an exclusive online competition to win a £500 The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey goodie bag filled with inspired product, and marketing communications via its social media channels and loyalty card database. WBCP publicised the activity on the official The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Facebook page and Lego also promoted the initiative via social media.

Sambro gears up for Wreck it Ralph launch

Playmobil Pirates now available on the App store

Sambro has developed an eye-catching FSDU unit to help retailers display the company’s new Wreck It Ralph range. The unit is in the shape of an arcade machine, tying in with the theme of the film. Wreck it Ralph, which has already proved to be both a box office and critical success in the USA, will be released in the UK in February, and Sambro’s range is available to order now.

Playmobil Pirates, the first Playmobil game for a digital platform, is now available as a free download on iOS and is coming soon to Google Play. The app is launched

worldwide in ten different languages. The launch is the result of a collaboration between Playmobil and Gameloft. Graphics within the game stay true to the original

Playmobil figures. The game features an immersive pirate universe full of swashbuckling characters, quests, mini-games, and more. Fans can meet popular figures, ships and buildings from Playmobil’s newest Pirates line, as well as Playmobil classics; they can also build their own pirate camp and recruit crew members. Fans who would like to speed up the expansion of their empire will have the option to buy additional features. Christian Buchner, project manager, Playmobil, said:

“With Gameloft comes a reputation of an experienced player in the market of mobile and social games. We are excited about bringing our pirates to the digital world via a creative platform so entertainingly and in such great detail. With the first Playmobil app, we are not only offering our fans a totally new mobile gaming experience, but are kick-starting our presence in the booming Smartphone and tablet market to enable us to make new and existing fans even more enthusiastic about our brand.”
