The English department welcomed a new member of staff in September, Miss White, who quickly settled into the QE routines.

The department has had a busy year once more, both in academic terms and with extra-curricular

activities. The IB courses were extended in to the U6, with our first examinations this May, having come around very quickly, it seems. The A Level Literature students have had a first taste of studying critical works and have produced some outstanding coursework, as well as having inspired us with their enthusiasm and originality. The Language students have tackled Media coursework for the first time and shown how sophisticated their use of language has become.

Last year’s early entry IGCSE English as a First Language, and English as a Second Language for the international students, proved very successful, and the department has now extended this opportunity to all of our Year 10 students. Coursework has been coaxed, wheedled, dragged out of Year 10 and 11 students and the standard of work has been very promising. There has also been a lot of creative thinking going on, and we were all amazed at the updated QE Romeo and Juliet posters produced by Vivian, Evalina, Koey and Shreesti. Great art work and understanding of the play.

At KS3 the focus on independence in learning grows in strength, with so much enthusiasm from the students in their study of novels, drama and poetry, and so much excellent work being produced. We have not yet found a worthy successor to Harry’s collection of sock puppets in terms of original thinking, but there has been a shortage of used tea-bags around the department as bundles of ‘ancient’ writings have been produced in response to the study of Shakespeare.

In the Spring Term the Year Seven students enjoyed a trip to see a performance of the
