Ethelburga’s? Perhaps the key to our success is the range of what we offer with the BTEC courses in Performing Arts, Fashion, Music, Business and PE to come soon. With the vast array of A level subjects, or the alternative of the IB Diploma, we are now of a size where we can provide courses that answer the aspirations and the learning styles of a very wide variety of learners. Getting students onto courses where they can succeed and where the course content excites them, inevitably leads to greater attainment and I believe that this has been the key to our success over the past few years. An A level average point score of 406 points per candidate represented a 30 point rise on the previous year’s record breaking score. This increase is symptomatic of what happens when students are studying courses that they enjoy and to which they have huge commitment.

But what of the particular highlights from the year? It is impossible to represent the depth and range of achievement that goes on in a school like Queen Ethelburga’s within a short speech, but it has become my custom to pick out a few outstanding examples to represent the efforts of all of our students in so many areas. Some of these students will be mentioned by name and others will be asked to come to the stage and receive certificates to mark their accomplishments. As they do so, I hope all students will reflect on their year and all of the skills, talents and attainments that they have developed over the past twelve months. It is through their endeavours that their confidence builds and every student within this hall will have a considerable list that should bring them pride and self belief.

One of the high level academic competitions in which the school takes part is the Maths Challenge run by the United Kingdom Maths Trust. The best in school in school at the Senior level was Emma Du who is also this year’s winner of the Foundation Essay Competition. At Intermediate level the best in school was
