Introducing our New Gap Staff Andrew Lock

Hi, I’m Andy, one of the GAPs for 2010. I come from the Island of Tasmania, down the bottom of Australia, where I have lived up until now. Back home in my free time, my mates and I would go camping, surfing, play sport and music. I am huge fan of Australian Rules Football (AFL), and am quickly learning the ropes of football (soccer) and rugby, having never played either before. Music is another big passion of mine, having studied classical and contemporary piano at school and at the Conservatorium of Tasmania, and I hope to be involved in Queen Ethelburgas Music department soon. After finishing school, I felt that I was not ready to start another 4-5 years of education straight away at University, and thought that a gap year would give me the opportunity to travel, and to make sure that I know what I want to study. So far it has done both. When I get back home, I plan to study Engineering in Tasmania, most likely Mechanical Engineering. Here at the school, I am working with Year 9 boys, as well as working in Chapter House and the office. I am learning a lot from being in a professional environment and look forward to the rest of the year.

Hi, I’m Anna, one of QE’s gappies for 2010. Moving to England from Australia has been such a big change in my life. It is such a difference between the warm city of Sydney and arriving here in York where it is constantly cold and extremely green. This has been a decision that has definitely changed my life and I am looking forward to the remainder of my year spent here. It has already been so great, getting to know not only the school and the brilliant Year 9 Girls but also the English culture and of course eating enough potatoes for an entire lifetime. Although I miss many things from home like the sun and the beach, I really am loving it here at QE.

This is my second year as a gap at QE and because I had such an awesome and unforgettable experience last year I felt the need to extend it. Within the school I work in Nursery and Reception as well as Year 7&8 boys boarding. The kids are great fun and are a pleasure to be in the company of. Back in Australia I am a humble goat farmer from the culturally enriched (and named) town of Nambucca Heads. Travelling and experiencing all the unique cultures of Europe is an ambition I aim to fulfill every chance I have.

GAP Year - a fantastic excuse to live it up for a year and grow as a person. Leaving my overly comfortable life Down Under in the sunny capital of Queensland (Brisbane), I embraced this opportunity of a lifetime because of my growing urges to see the world, become independent and acquire a wealth of experience. As a laid back bloke with a strong passion for football (Celtic!) and many welcoming relatives in Scotland, I was conveniently sent to the UK to work at QE. Although I miss the Queensland sun and its heavenly beaches, I feel that I have settled in well here at Queen Ethelburga’s. In this school you’ll find me chilling with the Year 9 boys, out-skilling them at football, reliving my childhood
