There was, however, with the inspection, an even more crucial judgement to be made in that this was to be the first inspection of Queen Ethelburga’s Faculty. For the Faculty this was an accreditation inspection, even more rigorous than the normal process of scrutiny, as this was to gain recognition from the Independent Schools Association for the Faculty to be registered as a separate school in membership of this organisation. A separate Lead Inspector was allocated to this area, working in conjunction with Mrs Willis as the Head of the Faculty and architect of the development plan and the educational organisation that distinguishes the Faculty from the College. We had been told that the usual process is for the accreditation inspection to take place to look at what has been put in place and this is normally followed the following year by a return visit to see what progress had been made before membership is bestowed. You can then imagine our delight when on receipt of the report; the Independent Schools Association Inspections Committee decided that there was enough evidence within the report, and within the school’s own monitoring, to admit the school immediately to ISA without the need for a follow-up visit. It was clear from their initial investigations into what the Faculty was trying to achieve and into how it was organised that the team were impressed with what the Faculty stood for and the innovative and individualised vision that it represented. Mrs Willis, Mrs Bunting, the Faculty teachers and students can feel very proud of what has been achieved and the potential that now exists to further develop this vibrant and exciting part of the Foundation.
One of the other facets commented on by the inspectors before they left was the openness and enthusiasm of the staff and pupils, and the pride and commitment that was shown in the life of the school. I have seen two very good prospective pupils in the last couple of months who have come to the school on the recommendation of one of the inspectors. I have taken this to be a large vote of confidence in what we do.
But what is it that distinguishes the education that we give here at Queen 5
