It is most pleasurable to report that the current school year has again seen some excellent individual and team performances from students in Derwent house across a wide range of sporting, dramatic, musical and cultural events. On every occasion Derwent students have taken up the challenge facing them with just the correct amount of competitiveness - the 'will to win - but not at all costs' ap- proach for which Derwent has become well known and respected throughout the school. Indeed, following the disappointment of not winning the House Cup last year (in spite of being victorious in the majority of the major events!), not for a minute did we question the fairness of the scoring system but instead simply went about the business of ensuring maximum participation for students of all backgrounds and abilities across the full spectrum of activities. In Derwent there exists a house fully committed to these guiding principles of the House system and long may this continue.

The House has been brilliantly served by the student House captains - Rosie Challis-Mercer and Ellie Hawkesworth for the bulk of the year and more latterly by Taylor Xiang and Natasha Kerrigan and their combined skills of enthusiasm and persuasion have been much appreciated by us all. At the time of this report going 'to press' the eventual winner of the House Cup is still very much in doubt but you can guarantee that Derwent will be up there with the front runners!

Notable performances during the year have come from our victorious netball teams and our second places in Sports day, in the debating event, in girls hockey and in the House quiz competition. We gained third place in both music and drama and battled bravely to gain third place in rugby. We are currently sec- ond in an ongoing football competition and have high hopes of winning the cricket event. Most pleasing has been the improvement in our individual house points total, demonstrating that our members are performing positively in general school life on a day-to-day basis - this was our poorest contribution last year but has been significantly boosted recently and may just hold the key to victory at the end of the year!

Our House meetings are worthy of mention - the atmosphere of encouragement and support from House members for their peers is absolutely outstanding. Never do the Heads of House need to resort to the kind of extreme cajoling tac- tics for which House team 'selection' is traditionally reknowned. There exists a spirit of teamship and friendship within Derwent House for which our members can feel justifiably proud - regardless of the eventual outcome of the overall House competition placings. May Derwent House go from strength to strength in the future.
