Other students have taken a gap year and then chosen to apply through UCAS with the help of the school. We are happy to assist with the application process and provision of references for students who have left and this year we have processed 12 additional applications for students who now have unconditional offers for October 2010.

Key Stage 4

Once again our students have worked hard to produce excellent results at GCSE with 98% of students gaining 5 x A* to C in the College, which has continued the steady rise in achievement year on year. Our top 10 performing students achieved 83 A*/A grades. The Top Ten were:

Sarah Harper achieved 4 x A* and 7 A grades Katherine Farrer achieved 2 A* and 8 A grades Tom Armitage gained 6 A* and 2 A grades Cameron Vear gained 3A* and 7A grades Georgina Wilkinson achieved 3A* and 5 A grades Kathryn Simpkins gained 5 A* and 4 A grades Tom Lashbrook achieved 1 A* and 7A grades Lauren Taylor-Crowhurst gained 7 A grades Stephanie Jones achieved 4A* and 2 A grades Aubrey Williams gained 4A* and 2 A grades.

The English, Mathematics and Science departments have again worked hard with the students, ensuring they achieved the all important 5 x A* to C grades. As well as work in lessons there were a number of additional workshops, one to one support and extra revision sessions.

The introduction of the OCR National in Business Studies and also in ICT has been successful and students achieved good results from these continuously assessed qualifications. In September we began the BTEC in Applied Science with a group of Year 10 students and we are looking forward to positive outcomes from this course.

The IGCSE in English as a first and second language, has been offered to QE international students for many years. As a qualification it is more straightforward than the usual GCSE English. Students were offered the chance to take an IGCSE English Language exam in Year 10. 18 students chose to enter and they achieved 3A*, 7A, 4B and 4 C grades. 10 International students took the IGCSE English for Second Language speakers and again did very well, with 4A, 4 B and 2 C grades. We have since extended this opportunity to all of our current Year 10 students.

The One Year GCSE course began in September 2009 with 18 students enrolled. They were a mixture of native English speakers and students with English as a second language. These students had come to the UK from educational systems around the world, having completed the equivalent of Year 10. The group have proved to be a focused group of students who have managed to cope with six or more GCSE subjects in a single year. They have all worked very hard indeed and we look forward to some excellent results for them in the summer.
