The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme at Queen Ethelburga’s grows in strength and reputation every year.


The Award Scheme itself is made up of 4 sections: Volunteering, Skill, Physical and Expeditions. We have mostly focused on the students completing the expeditions section with guidance on completing the others. The Adventure Service Challenge (ASC) is designed as an introduction to the main Award Scheme for younger pupils in Year 9.


This year we have had 14 students involved in the ASC and 11 Bronze, 10 Silver and 15 Gold level participants in the Award. They have spent their time getting their skills, physical and volunteering sections started and attending expedition training in preparation for their expeditions.


Of those involved in the Award we have two; Paige O’Malley and Kathryn Simkins who have already completed the award at Bronze and Silver level and are well on their way to finishing their Gold.


In the last season we have had 4 Bronze, 2 Silver and 1 Gold Award groups complete their expedition sections. They have battled on through wind, rain snow and even occasional sunshine!


This year as a skill the students in the ASC and Bronze groups have learnt sign language with a specialist teacher. This course ran from October until March and the students have learnt that not all communication has to be verbal.


Next year it would be good to see more students completing some of the other sections of the award to complete the level at which they are working, having done the hard work of completing the expedition.
