Marrick Priory – June 2009
Towards the end of the summer term another successful weekend trip to Marrick Priory took place. Marrick Priory is an outdoor pursuit centre set in the picturesque Yorkshire Dales, near Richmond. The living accommodation is very comfortably housed in the old priory and delicious food is provided by local farmers’ wives. All the weekend activities are organised and supervised by a very enthusiastic, well qualified team of specialist instructors.
Having left school at 6pm we arrived at 7:30 and after unloading the luggage started straight away on our evening activities. The weather being inclement these were based inside and involved much team cooperation. Among other things the pupils were involved in designing parachutes for eggs, transporting a small ball via short lengths of tubing, around obstacles and up and down stairs, climbing and abseiling. There was a great deal of concentration and hilarity all of which worked up an excellent appetite for supper!
The following morning students tucked into a hearty breakfast, having first made their own packed lunches to be taken on the days activities. Food plays a major part in the weekend as the constant activity and fresh air makes everyone very hungry! After breakfast it was off to the lake for a full day of canoeing and raft building. Everyone worked well together, rose to the challenges set by the instructors and arrived back at the Priory happy but tired. Energy was restored by a good dinner before the evening’s activities.
Before bed time the students got together in the common room and played a variety of games including Twister, Connect 4, Jenga, cards, pool and table tennis. A great time to cement friendships and enjoy games away from television and computers!
There was no time to rest! During Sunday morning the students had the opportunity to try the zip wire, to learn archery and to circumnavigate the rope course.
All the activities throughout the weekend provided challenging situations for pupils to overcome, some with great difficulty but huge satisfaction. It also gave the opportunity to help and encourage each other. Everyone came away with a wonderful sense of achievement!
