during this year in his chosen sport. He has been part of the Leeds Carnegie U19 Rugby Squad representing them against Wharfedale and Leicester U19s, but his main achievement has been gaining recognition at a National level by gaining a place on the Independent Schools’ Barbarians Team. He took part in fixtures against Cambridge University Freshers and Crawshay’s Welsh Select side. But the culmination of his season was a tour of America with the Barbarians team. He played an integral part in each of the matches and the tour culminated with a 33-29 win over the full USA Eagles U18s side. Along with his performances for these prestigious sides James has proved a great role model as Captain of Sport in school. His eloquent match reports in school assemblies and his encouragement of those around him in all aspects of sport has been an example to all and on behalf of the school I would like to thank him for this tremendous contribution. To receive a certificate in recognition of his achievements, I would like to invite James Collinge to the stage. I have to tell you that during my own school rugby career I brought down many men bigger than James; they used to trip over me
I hope this has given you just a flavour of what goes on in school day in day out, week in week out, but this couldn’t happen without the commitment and enthusiasm of the students themselves. Students who never cease to amaze with their proactivity and their commitment to such a wide range of interests. There is plenty of bad press around these days for young people but look what’s been achieved with the charity initiatives in the school during this year. Students have been ingenious in finding ways of prising money out of people’s pockets. Our main charity for this year has been The Yorkshire Air Ambulance but a huge number of other charities both here and abroad have received contributions. A total of £11,000 has been raised. When you think that we are a boarding community away from any significant populated areas and limited access to parents, this is a tremendous sum.
Students put great effort into the charity work as well as huge commitment to
