Year 10 explore the project “6 Billion Others “ by Yann Arthus-Bertrand – December 2009
A simple concept: go and meet the 6 billion inhabitants of the planet, listen to their stories, share with them.
In 2003, Yann Arthus-Bertrand began to interview people from countries all over the world. He asked them all
the same
questions, some about their fears, dreams, ordeals, hopes and some about love, religion and the future. From a Brazilian fisherman to a Chinese shopkeeper, from a German performer to an Afghan
farmer...as you can imagine the viewpoints and feelings varied massively.
As part of a unit on the sanctity of life, year 10 students used this project to explore each other’s opinions and produce their own personal testimonies on the issues that matter to them.
With their permission, here are some extracts: Family....
Should be there no matter what, shouldn’t shout and scream and should be smiley, two parents together, an all star boy and a girlie
girl...that’s the family on the TV but that’s just weird, life’s not like that. No one’s family is perfect but everyone’s family is theirs and no one can deny it. Families are funny, well they should be, you can’t feel weird around them.
Family is hard to describe, there’s the people you live with, then there’s people you’ve never met! I even think some of my friends are in my family, I mean I live with them at school so why can’t they be - Who is to say who is and who isn’t!
Love....
Love is like shoes, you ALWAYS want more, love of family, friends, yet then when you’ve got enough its way too much, you can’t love them all equally....My sister says she loves me but why? We fight and shout and hate each other at night and when we wake up she’s forgotten and loves me! I hope she knows I love her.
It’s the greatest emotion ever felt. It’s happy, it’s sad, it’s lonely, it’s wholesome, it’s funny, and it’s serious. All rolled into one. Nothing can beat it. ..Just never let it go, once found – don’t lose!
It’s a joyous instinct that should never be suppressed and so throw yourself into love. Heart first.
