the highest standards on and off the field and this was rewarded with a place in the Under 13 rugby 7s squad which went to Rosslyn Park. I hope the rest of the Under 12 squad follow the example these boys have set, if they do then next year will be even more successful.
Under 12’s & Under 13’s Football
As a result of the unpredictable, extreme weather conditions, this football season has been a difficult one for all involved. Matches have had to be re-arranged or cancelled on a number of occasions but despite this, the spirit and determination of the year 7 and 8 boys has been exemplary.
Without exception, all the boys involved have done their upmost to attend all of their Thursday evening training sessions, whether it’s been outside on the eleven-a-side pitches, or practicing their five-a-side skills in the new Genesis centre Sports Hall.
This high level of commitment has allowed each player to improve dramatically as individuals but more importantly, as team mates that understand and support one another through success and defeat.
Their first fixture against Hull Collegiate was an indoor five-a-side competition in which the Year 7 and 8 boys were mixed together to create four individual teams. These teams all performed to the best of their ability with a spirit that defined fair play. As a result the tournament was an enjoyable experience for all involved, emphasized by the praise bestowed on all of Queen Ethelburga’s Year 7 and 8’s by the Hull Collegiate staff, which included a volunteer form the Leeds United FC Academy.
Each game was a close encounter, with many results within a goal or two making the difference between a win or a loss. By the end of the tournament, Queen Ethelburga’s teams were spread out over the league table but a special mention must go to Queen Ethelburga’s B team which finished an extremely close runner up, after a tense final game.
Despite heavy rain, on Saturday 20th March Queen Ethelburga’s Year 7 and 8 Football teams travelled to Leeds Grammar School. The Year 8 boys came up against a very strong opposing side and despite a hat trick from Adam Barrass, the final score was 13 – 5 to Leeds Grammar.
The Year 7 boys had a much closer affair, whereby fantastic individual efforts from players such as Ryan Burgess, Kieran Winter and Connor Warren, allowed Queen Ethelburga’s to come from behind three times and once it was 3 - 3, the game was on a knife edge until Leeds Grammar got a few lucky goals to end the match with a winning score of 6 – 3. This spirited, never-give-up attitude, did not go unnoticed my both the opposing players and staff and as with the game against Hull Collegiate, there was extremely high praise for the all the players involved.
The Year 7 and 8’s are all too aware of the how important it is for them to be representing Queen Ethelburga’s in Football and they have done with the upmost respect and pride. Hopefully, both the Year 7 and 8’s will continue to show the same amount of dedication, enthusiasm and enjoyment to their remaining weekly training sessions until next year’s football season begins , when they can demonstrate their highly praised team spirit and individual abilities.
