Rely on your own strength of body and soul. Take for your star self-reliance, faith, honesty and industry. Don’t take too much advice—keep at the helm and steer your own ship,
And remember that the great art of commanding is to take a fair share of the work. Fire above the mark you intend to hit. Energy, invincible determination with the right motive, Are the levers that move the world.
Noah Porter
When I came to QE in Year 10 it was a very different QE to the one today. First we had the opening of the Phoenix Centre, and since then new fields have appeared, and we even have a huge new sports centre. Arriving at QE, I was immediately made to feel welcome, with my new room-mate asking me to help him drag his box of stuff down the corridor before asking my name. I thought moving to a boarding school would be a huge change, but the transition was so quick I was used to the post-prep rush to the toaster in a matter of days. Prep however remained a strange experience that I never really got used to.
Joining QE also provided me with so many opportunities that I had never even heard of, let alone considered. One of these was the Combined Cadet Force, with which I managed to gain some amazing flying experience, including aerobatics, and in the summer I became the first student from QE to get an RAF Gliding Scholarship. Another privilege, and responsibility, was being appointed Head of House for Eoforwic. This meant organising all house events which was always hard work but usually great fun. These opportunities teach everyone at QE to immerse themselves in everything they can, and the house competitions give everyone a healthy competitive nature.
The move to sixth form was a big change, and despite not having the easiest two years, I found I always had someone around, whether it be friends, or staff, both academic and boarding. Despite this, there were always good times, with a whole range of themed socials, which were always highly anticipated. We are now coming to the time when we are approaching our final sitting of exams, but we are all still looking forward to our leavers ball.
In keeping with tradition, I will mention that next year I plan to see the world before going to university, and of course would like to wish all the incoming prefects, especially the new Heads of Eoforwic, the best of luck next year. I'll be thinking of you all when exam time rolls in next year.
