At the beginning of the year, the first event was House Rugby and Hockey, where all the heads of houses were thrown in at the deep end with the task of getting people in school on a Saturday morning. Eventually, after much coaxing, persuading and near bribery, the teams were made and the matches were all lined up. Unfortunately Eoforwic had no big wins and the other houses made an early lead, but it was still early days.
The next house event was House Music, a big challenge for Eoforwic as historically it has been one of our weakest events, and I cannot remember us not coming last. Despite this, everyone was very enthusiastic, and even the Year 11’s joined in. Everyone involved tried incredibly hard, and after spending hours practicing and rehearsing we were finally onstage. All of our songs went incredibly well, ending with a stunning rendition of “Hit the Road Jack” by Tom Fisher that left the whole crowd wanting to hear more. In the end we had an incredibly successful afternoon, being robbed of first place but achieving a very respectable second place, and managed to push ourselves back into the house competition. Well done to everyone who took part.
Just before the October half term, we had the school quiz, which gave everyone a chance to gaining their house a few extra house points. We had some brilliant results, including the highest score in the school, but unfortunately we didn’t win the competition.
Following House Music, the next major event was House Debating, which had another one of its annual changes. For years 7 to 11 the debates were held in English lessons which helped get everyone more involved. There were many enthusiastic students in the lower years that got completely immersed in the competition and across the whole school Eoforwic had some very good results, winning in many year groups. In the sixth form, the debate was held as an event with the two teams in each debate being watched by their two houses. In this, we were pitted against Lyminge, who had so far managed to win almost every house event. We managed to put our points across, and finally managed to win our first event, managing to get us into first place in the House competition.
Following this we had more sports, this time Basketball and Netball. In the Netball, Eoforwic did really well, and the girls managed to get second place, which has managed to keep Eoforwic in first place. House basketball will be played over the next few weeks and there are some very strong, dedicated teams lined up.
The next big competition is House Drama, which again hasn’t been Eoforwic’s strongest event. Despite this, we are all eager to do well following the success in other events and maintain our lead until the end of the year. This year we have been given the theme Pantomime, and the story of Little Red Riding Hood as our stimulus, so hopefully there will be a lot of opportunity for fun for everyone involved.
After Easter our new heads of house assume control with their first challenge being sports day, which should prove to be a good day if everyone continues to try as hard as they have been doing all year. We also have various charity events happening to try and raise more money, and the house that raises the most money will be announced at the end of the year. For a few years this has been one of our strongest points, so I hope that we’ve done well this year, and manage to maintain our position in first place up until the end of the year.
