Three cadets have now completed their workbooks for the BTEC First Diploma in Public Services. Most of the training in the cadet syllabuses is recognised by the BTEC and the only additional work the cadets have to do to gain this valuable qualification is to compile a portfolio of evidence of the skills they have learned and the activities they have undertaken.

Finally, to deliver this ambitious plan, we need good facilities and qualified and motivated staff. The first phase of the new CCF Centre was completed in January and has had a huge impact on everything we do. We now conduct weekly weapons training with our own Cadet GP rifles and in the summer term we will drive the short distance to RAF Linton on Ouse to conduct live firing on the range. This focus on skill at arms and marksmanship will allow the cadets to compete on a more equal footing with the big schools in the area, some of which have their own range at school and some of their cadets do more live firing than regular soldiers. We also have better access to our uniforms and other stores and the day-to-day running of the contingent has become much more effective. When a CCF office and classroom are added we will have a first-class facility.

On the staffing side, we said farewell to Flight Lieutenant Beaumont, who left on a free transfer to the Grammar School at Leeds, and we also lost Lt Simmonds, albeit temporarily, on maternity leave. On her return she will help out on Thursday afternoons and we will try to find a camouflage baby carrier for those weekends away in the field. Captain Terry returned to the contingent and the arrival of new science teacher and shooting guru Lt Wood means that the Army Section is manned to establishment levels (ie we have everybody we should have). Sadly the same is not true of the RAF section and finding a flight commander is a priority.
