First of all, my sincere congratulations to those who have achieved places as the new prefects of the year. You have been given an important position, not merely defined by the specific posts, but also with the obligation of presenting yourselves as role models for other students.
So, what does a prefect do? Let’s not talk about shiny badges that you get to wear around the school; neither about the lunch queue that you get to skip at lunchtime; nor the standing up-right, looking smart in assemblies. It is about you and how you make the most out of it (Hey! I think I have heard this somewhere else before…). As you have probably already noticed, being a prefect – a shiny badge running around- will catch some extra attention. This is sometimes stressful as we all want to give people a good impression.
How to fulfil that? Well…I guess it is the best not to appear in the public domain at all; hide in a random corner in the school as we have plenty of them, and just mind your own business… NO! Being a prefect, you have an obligation to help out with tutors and most importantly of all, to help out students in your year and the other years. Above all, it is to contribute to the school, as I am sure you have all said ‘I so promise’.
And finally, as this has to fit into a small column in the corner of the magazine, I shall not waffle on forever and ever. Enjoy the rest of your time in QE; work hard and play hard! For the students like me who are leaving, I wish you all a very shiny future!
Justine Liang, Community Prefect
I came to England for the first time in September 2008 to start my Sixth Form at QE and started my life as a boarder. Fortunately it was not difficult for me to settle in, because I soon discovered that there were many international students who I could mix with.
I was lucky enough to be appointed an international prefect because it really allowed me to become more sociable and develop my leadership qualities. I have really enjoyed school life and have made the most of the opportunities that I have had.
I would like to thank all the people who have helped me whilst at the school – those who have helped me develop my skills in sport, those who encouraged and enabled me to excel in my studies and those who looked after me in so many other ways.
Best wishes to all of you. I hope that we can keep in touch. Jim Chiu, Community Prefect
