Saudi Arabia – a country in the Middle East – is the world’s second highest producer of oil (behind Venezuela) and is the source of 22% of the world’s crude (unrefined) oil.

OPEC (Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries) is an intergovernmental organisation (more than one government is in charge of it), founded by Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait and Venezuela in 1960. With fourteen current members, its main function is to control the price of oil.

In figure 2 we can see that in 2016 the Middle East produced 19.21 million barrels of oil per day. Saudi Arabia was responsible for 10.19 million of these barrels of oil, making it the region’s largest producer of oil by far.
