high natural increase in population occurs when the
birth rate is higher than the death rate (see Chapter 18: Population). It
tends to occur in areas with a young adult population. Fingal in north Dublin has the lowest average age in the country.
Causes of Dublin Population Change
Migration within a city occurs when people move
from one part of the city to another. This can occur as a result of planned initiatives, personal choices or changes in people’s circumstances. The movement of people from inner-city Dublin to Ballymun was an example of migration within the city of Dublin.
Rural to Urban Migration
2016 Census figures show that Ireland’s rural–urban population divide is getting bigger, with nearly two-thirds of the population
now living in urban areas.
A MASSIVE 62.7% of Ireland’s population now lives in urban areas, according to new Central Statistic Office figures. Ireland’s urban population is divided as follow: 44% in Dublin, 11% in Cork and 7.7% spread throughout other major urban centres.
Can you think of one advantage and one disadvantage of living in an urban area?
303 Rural to urban migration is the movement of
people from rural areas (countryside) to urban areas (towns and cities). This has led
to urbanisation and is a significant reason for the growth of Dublin in recent years. We will examine rural to urban migration more closely in this chapter.
Immigration
occurs when people choose to move from their country to a
new country for economic reasons (see Chapter 19: Migration). Immigrants often choose to settle in urban areas where there are good job prospects, strong transport links and an existing
community or network of people from their homeland.
