An Irish Water Debate Your class will be divided into teams of three. Your task is to discuss and debate the positives and negatives of water charges. Each team should present arguments in an attempt to win the debate.

Decide whether we are in favour of or against water charges (your teacher might make this decision for you to ensure a balanced debate).
Use the internet to gather facts to support our side of the argument. Choose at least three strong points that support our side of the debate.
Each write a speech that clearly states our side of the debate and that develops at least one strong argument.
Practise and deliver our speeches with confidence.

Include statistics and stories in our speeches that will engage and entertain our audience.
Investigate how water is paid for in other countries and how safe, clean water can be provided to all people in Ireland for generations to come.
Think about what the opposing teams will say and prepare rebuttals (counter-arguments) for their points.

Use effective videos or other props in the presentation of our speeches.
Peer Assessment
Practise your speeches with your team mates. You should assess each speech using the criteria above. After each person has practised their speech, provide feedback on what they did well and how their speech might be improved.
