Case Study: The Cost of Urban Sprawl – House Prices
Urbanisation has had an effect on housing prices in Dublin and surrounding urban areas. If we compare 2015 and 2016 prices in Dublin, this yearly increase is clear.
A lack of affordable accommodation in Dublin city and county has contributed to an increase in accommodation costs in urban areas serving Dublin, e.g. Maynooth, Co. Kildare, and Ashbourne, Co. Meath, due to an increase in need and demand for affordable housing.
Being numerate:
Create a bar chart comparing 2015 house prices in Dublin to those in 2016 (figure 3). Label the x-axis ‘Dublin areas’ and the y-axis ‘House prices’.
3. Average Dublin city and county house prices, 2015 vs 2016
1. What is urban sprawl? 2. Explain the effects of urban sprawl. 3. Can you think of one way in which urban sprawl might have affected the counties surrounding Dublin?
2 Urban Decay
Inner-city urban decay is the deterioration of an urban area due to neglect or age. It can result in buildings being left empty and becoming run down.
Urban decay is a significant problem in cities all over the world, including Dublin. It can be a result of migration from an area, which results in a change in the number and age of people living in that area.
