3 24.5 Sustainable Exploitation of Forestry: Ireland
A sustainable forest is a forest that is carefully managed. Trees that are felled (cut down) are replaced with seedlings (young trees) that eventually grow into mature trees. This is a carefully and skilfully managed process.
Forests provide a number of essential products. These can be split into two different types: timber-based products and non-timber-based products. Timber-based products are all wood-based; non-timber-based products are made up of anything else a forest can provide.
