It began life off the coast of western Africa in late September 2016. From there it travelled northwards, picking up speed as it went, reaching top speeds of 257 km/h.

According to the Haitian government, the damage done by Hurricane Matthew to Haiti was estimated at $1.9 billion.
In the US, the cost of Matthew’s damage was recorded at over $10 billion.
Thousands of flights to and from these countries and others in the region were cancelled, causing massive travel disruption for people.
Schools and colleges were forced to close, and businesses and industry shut down during the hurricane.
