Line graphs are often used to display information in a visually appealing way. Unlike pie charts or bar charts, line graphs can track changes to information over periods of time, e.g. the number of students choosing a particular subject in 5th year over a five-year period.
The following table displays the information accurately: Subject
Geography Chemistry
Engineering French
2012 34 18 16 14
2013 30 20 20 16
2014 24 19 20 12
2015 35 20 22 10
2016 38 18 24 10
However, it is not very visually appealing. Trends (the way something is developing) can be difficult to see in a table such as this. A line graph displays the same information in a far more appealing way. Trends can be seen clearly, and information is easier to understand.
Number of Students taking Subjects in 5th year 40 30 20 10 0 2012 2013
2014 Year
2015 Geography Chemistry Engineering French 2016
Examine the line graph and answer these questions:
1. According to the line graph, which subject is the most popular?
2. What trends can you identify for each of the subjects over this five- year period?
