Being literate: Your teacher will read aloud the statements below. If you agree with the statement,
stand up (or put your hand up) and if you do not agree, stay sitting down (or keep your hand down). Count and note for each statement how many students stand up/hands go up and how many remain seated/hands stay down. You must then write an explanation into your copy to explain why you agreed or disagreed with each statement.

28.5 Technology and Human Development
‘Give a man a fish
and you feed him for a day, teach him how to fish and you feed him for life.’
Providing appropriate technology to a country can significantly help its human development. This type of technology is sometimes called ‘intermediate technology’.
This technology can solve complicated problems for developing countries using cheap and readily available materials. It can be used to improve health services, farming techniques and water supplies for a developing country.
An example of intermediate technology can be seen in the image here. The people of this community were assisted in using materials readily available to them to make a water pump. This pump brought water from a nearby river, which was used to irrigate crops, providing them with a sustainable food source as well as a product to sell.
