Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro is the second-largest city in Brazil and has a population of 6.5 million people. Rio has grown rapidly over the last fifty years to become a major industrial, administrative, tourist and commercial centre. The staging of the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games – major globalised events – brought global attention to the city.
Economic growth and globalisation has attracted many migrants from Brazil and immigrants from other countries to the city, resulting in population growth.
