Positive Impacts of the Volcanic Eruption Social Impact
Reduced unemployment
The development of tourism as a result of the volcanic eruption at Eyjafjallajökull created jobs.
Increased tourism and employment
After the eruption, a promotional campaign led to a big increase in the number of foreign tourists. In 2008, Iceland was visited by fewer than 500,000 people. In 2016 the number of foreign travellers had increased to 1.8 million.
Economic Impact Generated income
A new Icelandic tourist attraction has been built – the Eyjafjallajökull visitor centre. This is generating income for the local community.
