Welcome to the October issue of Personal Care Global magazine. This month, we focus on three topics: sun care, hygiene and natural ingredients. Natural ingredients were

Barcelona, where delegates were presented with the latest industry and academic research. Among the many fascinating presentations


I had the good fortune to attend, there was a particularly interesting talk by Professor Ralf Paus of the University of Miami’s department of dermatology and cutaneous surgery. Paus detailed his findings that human hair


follicles engage in chemosensation, or in other words ‘smell’, to regulate their own growth. They are also likely, he said, to have many


other as yet unknown biological functions such as regulation of pigmentation, stem cell survival, ageing and immune status. The professor laid down a challenge to the


cosmetic industry to identify new olfactory and taste receptors, as well as TRP (transient receptor potential) ion channels in hair follicles and skin

whose ligands can be patented for defined applications. Paus also suggested the industry combines


odorants/fragrances and tastants to develop optimal vehicles for the maximisation of desired effects and stake new claims. He further suggested the research could be harnessed to develop applications related to hair growth, as well as others such as skin rejuvenation, UV-free tanning and wound healing. Elsewhere in this issue, there is an interview


with Brazilian-based representatives of Clariant, which presented new concepts and formulations late last month at in-cosmetics Latin America in São Paulo. In addition, there is a comprehensive preview


of in-cosmetics Asia, which takes place on 7-9 November. The Bangkok show promises to be bigger


and better than ever by adding a host of new features, including an Indie Trail, an India country focus programme and the ‘Love Is In The Hair’ Spotlight On product showcase. As usual, we will have a booth at the show
